What belly fat can tell you about your body (and what to do about it)

One of the most common complaints I hear from woman as they get older is how difficult it is to lose belly fat. 

 

Belly fat in the upper abdomen, lower abdomen or love handles is a sign that there are some imbalances in your body.  The good news is that there are several simple solutions to balance the body and help banish belly fat.

 

 

 

 

5 Things Belly Fat can tell you about your body

 

1) Exercise is not what it should be

 

Belly fat can mean that you are not exercising at all, or it can be a sign of over training.  Belly fat responds best to a mix of interval workouts and low intensity yoga or Barre.  Skip the hours on the elliptical or treadmill and work out smarter, not harder.

 

 

 

2) There is likely insulin sensitivity

 

Belly fat often signals difficulty processing sugars or simple carbohydrate foods.  With insulin sensitivity, the body is likely to store sugar as fat instead of using it efficiently.  A simple solution is to balance each meal with a mix of protein, carbohydrate and fat and reduce overall carbohydrate and sugar intake. 

 

Avoid eating a purely carbohydrate snack or meal (like a plain banana for a snack or a bowl of pasta with red sauce for dinner).

 

 

 

3) You may have depleted adrenals, thyroid or imbalanced hormones

 

Lower belly fat is a sign of imbalanced stress hormones while love handles can signal imbalanced estrogen.  Upper belly fat signals metabolism issues. 

 

Make daily relaxation techniques a staple in your day- deep breathing, a few minutes of meditation or a little yoga.  There are many gentle, safe herbs that can help balance hormones as well.

 

 

 

4) Frequent bloating can signal food intolerances
